Acupuncture for Stress and Anxiety

Many of us deal with anxiety and stress everyday. Some may only experience these challenges every now and then, and others, much more frequently. The factors differ from person to person and day to day.

According to HowToCure, “Anxiety and depression are the new age epidemic that are spreading widely. With over 40 million people in the US suffering from anxiety and its symptoms, around 17.8 million have been reported with depression alone. In such a scenario, the world relies on anti-depressants and anxiety-relief medications which in some cases, have proved harmful.”

Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective and safe way to treat both Stress and Anxiety, along with a long list of other concerns. From fertility to arthritis, from fear to compulsive behavior, more and more people are turning to acupuncture for many of their health needs. Never tried acupuncture before? Don’t like needles? Here are a few things you might like to know.

Personal experience….. I have suffered from anxiety and stress most of my life and thought I would like to try something new to me. While some may think that treating common issues with alternative therapies is modern, acupuncture has been around for a long time. It is just starting to gain the recognition that it really deserves! Originally, I began having treatments to alleviate my PMS symptoms (BTW, I can’t say enough praise about how my cycle and symptoms have dramatically improved since beginning treatment!!!). Some of the other benefits I felt after a session were a calm mind, complete sense of peace and as if I had just woken up from sleeping for several hours. People often fall asleep during their treatments! The calm music, warm rooms and dim lighting make for a really relaxing experience. The after effects lingered for days, sometimes longer. Feeling less stress, fewer moments of anxiety and finding myself living in the present moment. I can not say enough about my experiences with acupuncture, and my family will say the same… I have roped my 16 year old and my boyfriend into acupuncture, and I am still working on my 10 year old. I’m sure she’ll come around:-)

As for clinical proof, there are many studies which support the healing effects of acupuncture treatments for stress and anxiety. In a SciELO trial to evaluate the relevance of using auricular (ear) therapy with needles or seeds to reduce stress levels of nursing professionals. This trial included participants that had been evaluated and deemed to have medium or high levels of stress and included 75 nursing team members. The conclusion was that the participants who completed the study experienced a reduction in stress level which lasted for about 15 days after the trial. In another study, the efficacy of auricular (ear) needles was evaluated with a group of individuals that experience generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). “The needles were 0.25-.30mm in diameter and ranged between 25-40mm in length. Needle depth ranged from 0.2cm to 0.5cm. Acupuncture therapy was administered for a period of four weeks at two sessions per week for a total of eight acupuncture treatments. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment principles were to increase lucidity, tranquilize by nourishing the Heart, calm the nerves and regulate the Qi. Both ear and body style acupuncture were effective in significantly reducing anxiety.

More people are turning to natural methods for stress and anxiety reduction. If you are experiencing increased levels of stress or anxiety, acupuncture might be a step in the right direction.
